McMillan Masonry prides itself on combining an enthusiasm for traditional mallet and chisel skills with the highest standards of craftsmanship. We offer a comprehensive memorial stone service and understand that commissioning a headstone or plaque is a deeply personal experience.

So we welcome and encourage anyone to come and visit us at our Shropshire workshop where there are many examples of commissions undertaken and it offers us an excellent opportunity to speak in person and to develop a bespoke design. If a visit in person is not possible we can discuss your ideas and through the aid of detailed drawings, ensure the right design is created.

We insist on using regional and traditional hard limestone, sandstones and slates from around the British Isles, we free hand our calligraphy and designs, and hand cut our letters and figurative carvings.

When we set out after years of training in Edinburgh and Bath, we wanted to build a firm which prided itself on traditional hand skills and to recapture the sense of craftsmanship within memorial masonry.

We wanted to blend the best of the old and ancient ways with modern technology, whilst not becoming machine operators.

We believe we have achieved this and what makes us different from other standard memorial firms (but not our prices) is the evidence of human patience, endeavour and skill in all our work which bridges the gap with the past.

"We wanted a hand carved headstone for our parents and had a very personal and intricate design drawn out but had no idea where to find someone with the skill and expertise to carry it out. Luckily we found the McMillan brothers at McMillan Masonry and we knew as soon as we met them that they were the right firm for us. Our first meeting with them was carried out at a workshop in a medieval farm building in a sunlit Shropshire meadow... We were hooked! Over the following months Ben McMillan guided us through the whole process... The whole experience was very enjoyable and satisfying for us. We were included in the process throughout and the whole team were very friendly, amenable and professional with an obvious love and enthusiasm for their work".
